For my first net-pick, I’ve decided to review one of my all-time favourite television shows: Sherlock. The British program provides its audience with a modern adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, with Benedict Cumberbatch starring as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman (a.k.a. Bilbo Baggins) as Doctor John Watson. Unfortunately for the crime drama’s die-hard fans, only nine 90-minute episodes have been released to date.
Sherlock follows the story of two “consulting detectives,” Sherlock and Watson, as they bustle about London solving a myriad of mysteries. Sidekick Watson quickly pushes them both into the limelight by making a hobbit habit out of blogging about Sherlock’s impressive deductions as he cracks each complex case. Mr. Holmes is the most loveable high functioning sociopath you’ll ever have the pleasure of viewing from a distance.
Sherlock is a brilliantly well-rounded show, seamlessly shifting between suspense, comedy and drama. It’s a cinematic roller coaster; you’ll find yourself crying from laughter one minute, but sadness the next.
Did I mention that the cinematography is stellar? I want to say that it’s high budget, but I haven’t been able to pull myself away from the television screen long enough to check.
Each season has been released two years apart, with the first one premiering in 2010. I think I speak for all “Holmies” (way better than the current fan-name “Sherlockians,” right?) when I say that hopefully the next one quickly follows suit! I can’t wait to watch Eggs Benedict Crumblybread and Mr. Baggins animate their uniquely compelling characters in season four.
I’m Sher-locked.
9.5/10 – would watch a hundred times over.
This is one of my favourite shows.
I’m a big fan of the older BBC Sherlock Holmes series starring Jeremy Brett (and of the original stories). When this came out I was hooked right away.
It’s true that there aren’t many episodes, but each one is pretty close to a movie in its own right, don’t you think?
(And yes, I think “Holmies” is better.) 🙂

Yeah they are the same length as movies, but the series is so good that it kills me to wait two years until the next season!
I’ll have to check out the older version – thanks for suggesting it!
