Mr. D follows the unusual and concerning life of a high school teacher named Gerry Duncan – self-nicknamed as Mr. D.
Premiering in 2012, the Canadian sitcom series stars comedian Gerry Dee, as a not-so-knowledgeable teacher at Xavier Academy who will stop at nothing to be the next physical education teacher.
As a creator, writer and executive producer of the show, Gerry Dee chose to base Mr. D off of his decade of experience teaching at a private high school in Toronto before becoming a professional comedian in 2003. The fact that the show is loosely drawn from his own personal experiences makes me feel slightly concerned for our future generations.
With a Michael Scott-like personality, Mr. D not only hampers the kids’ learning and productivity, but is also extremely self-centered. The lovable loser’s only school friend is a fresh out of college nerd who still lives at home with his mother, and his classes have zero respect for him. With absolutely no knowledge of history – the subject that he teaches – he tries to prod lessons and answers out of students, or just lets them watch movies.
Mr. D is a total dad; his jokes are of eye-rolling quality, and at certain times I feel genuinely hot-faced embarrassed for him.
Mr. D was renewed for a third and fourth season to be aired on CBC.
Take a look-see at just how committed Mr. D is to his job.
7.5/10 – by far one of the best Canadian television shows out there.
